What rant?

This is mainly for Becca's benefit: sweetie, I'm not mad at you, and not even grupmy about the decision. Trust me. I'm glad that you stood up for yourself. I'm proud of you. :)

Sorry, folks, no rant today.

I found an old entry of mine that may/may not relate to the whole Intentional Community idea:

So what do I want to do?
I want to have goats for lactose-free milk and weedeaters, and sheep for wool and lawnmowing. I want chickens for ethical eggs and fertilizer and an alarm clock. I want to shear my own sheep and spin and dye and knit the wool. I want a huge garden that supplies most of my fruits and vegetables. I want to make homeade hard cider and maybe wine, applesauce and jelly. I want to grow lavender and rosemary and thyme and sage and oregano and comfrey. I want paper birch and red alder trees and douglas fir. I want tomatoes and zucchini and eggplants and spinach and kale and carrots and onions and more.

I want to play my harp. I want a big harp for at home or special occasions and a little one to take wherever I please. I want to play for friends and family who drop by. I want to play in downtown Portland in Pioneer Square just for the heck of it and busk at the Oregon Country Fair because I can. I want to play at PaganFaire (just what they need--more harp players!). I want to play duets with Katrina when we've both gotten decent with our respective instruments (she's learning the violin). I want to play duets with Rick and his wooden recorder. I want to play duets with my Uncle Brian and his flute. I want to play along with Taarka just because I can. I want to go to Lord of the Rings conventions and play adaptations of Tolkien songs and bits from the movies (especially the drinking songs) and generic Celtic music in a hobbit costume. I want to play backup for Heather Alexander for a song or two if she'll let me. I want to play at someone's wedding.

I want friends who live nearby and/or on the same property and we meet up to share meals and drink sometimes and linger at the table for too long telling mutual baaad jokes and stories we've all heard before. I want people whom I can lean on, who can lean on me. I want people with whom I can fight and still love fiercely. I want people who can drum around a campfire or sing goofy songs or watch movies together. I want people who will dress up in garb and be pirates or puritans or renn-faire rabblerousers. I want people with whom I can discuss matters of life and death, religion and politics, or just whether or not LOTR is the best thing ever.

I want books around, especially once there are kids in the picture. Everything C.S. Lewis, Madeleine L'Engle, J.R.R. Tolkien ever wrote. Francesca Lia Block, Laura Ingalls Wilder, all of ElfQuest. The Secret Garden. The Mists of Avalon. Dr. Seuss. Everything from The Spiral Dance to the Bible to the Baghavad-Gita and whatever's inbetween. We'll burn holes in our library cards, the librarians will know us by first name, and they will see me and their other parent read whenever we have the chance.

They'll know they can touch my harp and not get in trouble, especially when they're careful not to tip it over. I hesitate to say too much about the kids thing because, first of all, fate may conspire against me and decide that's not in my future, and because everyone says they'll raise their kids just right and then finds out they're only human after all. So I'll leave that one for now.

So how do I make a living out of that?
