Be the change you want to see, dammit!
Jul. 27th, 2003 07:58 pmYes, I will agree that humans are animals. I'll even go further and say that humans tend to outwit themselves more often than they actually acheive anything of lasting importance. Is that reason enough not to try at all, to give up or be really, really cynical? No! Some cynicism is, I think, warranted, but why be so gloomy about it?
Change what you can! We all make mistakes, fumble and screw things up, and generally make fools of ourselves. Don't like what you see around you? Do something about it! Even if it's just in the realm of interpersonal relationships, do something about it! You'll never really know how much of a difference you make for someone else if you don't try!
And what of the argument that some people just aren't worth it? To this, I reply: if there are people that aren't worth caring about or trying to help at least once, then why not help them anyway and MAKE them worth it?
As Mother Jones said, gentle readers: "Pray for the dead, and fight like hell for the living!" If you don't do something about it, who will?
Dare to be idealistic, and possibly even optimistic, in the face of this modern world. Even when things get difficult, from my own experience at least, I tend to be a lot happier and well-adjusted than I would be if I were a pessimist or a realist.
Until next time, friends.
